Transparency and Texture: Machine Embroidery for Quilts
Sheer fabrics now generally available, offer exciting possibilities for quilt design. In this workshop, students explore methods to create wall hangings and quilts that imply the idea of translucency and 'looking through'. Some pieces can be double sided and may be viewed from the front or back. A variety of materials are used, including hand painted silks, organza and dissolvable film. The work may be embellished with machine and hand embroidery. Simple piecing methods will be used for assembly.
Traditional Techniques: New Applications
Time-honoured methods of sewing and fabric embellishment can be adapted to create interesting contemporary quilts. Topics include felt making, mark making, collage and machine embroidery.
Colour on Fabric: Dyeing and Painting Workshops
Basic hand-dyeing of silk, wool and cotton fabrics using hot water acid and direct dyes and procion fibre reactive cold water dyes.
Painting, stamping and stencilling on fabrics using silk and fabric paints.
